The second edition of the ELI Summer School, this year hosted by ELI-NP from 27 August to 1 September 2017, was organized in a very beautiful mountain landscape, at an altitude of 1300 meters at Fundata Resort in Cheile Gradistei, Romania. More than 100 school attendees have arrived from all over the world: China, Japan, Spain, Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Israel, Austria and Hungary.
The event was prepared in the smallest details, starting with proper accommodation, succession of the invited lecturers’s presentations, preparation and dissemination of the promotional and informational materials. The result of these concerted efforts created a very pleasant work atmosphere, both lecturers and students were engaged in constructive dialogues. An extremely interesting and lucrative part of ELISS 2017 was the poster session, during which the students demonstrated their extraordinary training and high abilities in their field.
The scientific program started with the introduction of the three ELI pillars and its scientific potentials. There were lectures for example on time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, laser based electron acceleration and medical applications, nuclear physics with gamma beams and nonlinear XUV processes. Kazuo A. Tanaka, Georg Korn, Dimitris Charalambidis, Subhendu Kahaly, Paraskevas Tzallas and Alexander Sergeev gave presentations - to name a few of the distinguished lecturers. The scientific programme of the event available here.
Last, but nor least, we should praise the initiative of the hosts to introduce the participants in the history of Romania by organizing a wonderful excursion to Bran Castle and Rasnov Fortress, and to offer the audience interesting presentations and a book launch, as well as some wonderful Romanian folk dances on the evening of August 30th.
On Friday the special closing programme of the summer school was a visit to ELI-NP in Magurele, where participants had the chance to visit the future experimental halls and laser chambers, and to ask all their questions related to the scientific background and the operation of the facility.
To conclude, we consider that ELISS 2017 was a real success, a very good inspirational model and an important premise for the success of the summer school next year at ELI-ALPS in Szeged, Hungary.
We take the opportunity to thank the students, the scientific and organizational committees, as well as all the people involved who, through hard work and dedication, have ensured the succes of ELISS 2017.
